A tax sale will be held Wednesday at the Howard County Administration Center, with a listing of more than 300 properties.

The sale will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Room 338 of the Howard County Administration Center, 220 N. Main St. Officials are encouraging participants to arrive between 9 and 9:30 a.m. for registration.

A list of the properties available through the tax sale is available on the SRI Inc. website,, the company conducting the sale. As of Tuesday afternoon, the property list showed 354 results.

“It’s not that we want to sell people’s properties. It’s that we need properties that are positive to the community,” said Howard County Auditor Martha Lake, “because the taxes support the operations in the community that everybody needs, the services.”

The properties, said Lake, “will be on the list for people to come and pay the taxes and then buy a lien on the property.”

However, current owners who had their property put on the tax sale because of unpaid taxes have one year to redeem the property, although at an increased rate.

“Anyone can redeem a property,” said Peggy Mallaber, the county’s tax sale supervisor. “They have one year. … Even when we do sell the liens, we still give them a year to come back and redeem it.”

Potential buyers are also encouraged to be aware of what they’re buying because if “it wasn’t what they thought it was, then that’s money that they lost," said Lake.
